其次,資料A的漫畫家描繪人們正努力撐著「鼓爭幹勁,力爭上游,多快好省地建設社會主義」的龍舟,反映中共政府推行大躍進計劃,落實集體化並建設社會主義。

然而,資料未能反映其他政治運動。

就我所知,中共於1953年推行第一個五年計劃,提出「一化三改造」的口號,成立「互相組」將農業、工業及私營工商業集體化,結果於1957年時農業和工業增長分別達4.5%和19%,有利於建設社會主義。

更甚,大躍進計劃除了總路線外,還有人民公社、工業及農業大躍進等計劃,以農業大躍進為例,毛澤東提出「人有多大膽,地有多大產」及「無雨大豐收,大旱大增產」的口號,動員全國民眾建設為社會主義,亦為資料局限。

The political movement reflected in source A is the Great Leap Forward.

According to source A, the dragon boat is setting off to “The General Line” with the slogan “Go all out, aim high and achieve greater, faster, better and more economical results in building socialism” written on the flag. The Great Leap Forward aimed to establish communism in PRC, hence it can be deduced that the political movement shown in source A is the Great Leap Forward.


(b) What was the cartoonist’s attitude towards the political movement you have identified in (a)? Explain your answer with reference to Source A. (3 marks)

The cartoonist holds a supportive, optimistic and satisfactory attitude towards the Great Leap Forward.

According to source A, “The General Line” beacon is depicted as the sun, meaning that “The General Line” brightened China like the sun, leading China to enlightenment, which is beneficial to its modernization, therefore the cartoonist holds a positive view.

Moreover, source A shows that people were riding on the “Go all out, aim high and achieve greater, faster, better and more economical results in building socialism” dragon boat, indicating that most Chinese people supported The Great Leap Forward, prompting production at all cost, hence the cartoonist is supportive of the Great Leap Forward.

Suggested answer

Source A is useful in understanding the Great Leap Forward.

According to source A, the caption of the cartoon is “The General Line is the lighthouse on the road towards building socialism”, implying that the central government formulated “The General Line”, leading China to reformation and building a socialist society.

Moreover, people in source A are riding on a “Go all out, aim high and achieve greater, faster, better and more economical results in building socialism” dragon boat, which reflects the implementation of the Great Leap Forward by the central government, to carry out collectivism and to construct socialism.

However, the source fails to show other political movements.

According to my own knowledge, the First Five Year Plan was implemented in 1953, the central government suggested the slogan of “one socialism three transformation” and the collectivism of agricultural, industrial and private commercial sectors. This resulted in 4.5% and 19% growth in agriculture and industries respectively in 1957, facilitating construction of socialism.

Other than that, apart from the General Line, the Great Leap Forward also introduced the People’s Commune and the Agricultural and Industrial Great Leap Forward. For instance in terms of Agricultural Great Leap Forward, Mao Zedong proposed the slogan “the yield increases as much as people’s courage” and “no rain yet great harvest, drought yet booming production” to mobilize people around the country in constructing socialism. This shows that the source is limited in showing other political movements like the above mentioned ones.
